The Tate Galleries are an established network of four art galleries - Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St. Ives, Cornwall. Tate Britain evolved from the National Gallery of British Art opened in 1897. In 1932 the Gallery expanded the collection by adding Modern Art to its permanent works of British Art and became the Tate Gallery. Space was always a concern and in 2000 the decision was made to create the Tate Modern by separating the collection by style of art. The Tate Modern sits on the south side of the Thames across from Tate Britain with riverboat rides between the two galleries. There is also a pedestrian walkway, the Milennium Bridge, which goes from St. Paul Cathedral to the Tate Modern. The Tate Liverpool displays modern art while the Tate St. Ives has modern and contemporary works.
