People have been living and working on the banks of the River Cam since before the Roman invasion over 1200 years ago. The city of Cambridge is located in the heart of East Anglia 50 miles NE of London. In modern times it has evolved into a center of high technology businesses frequently referred to as the Silicon Fen being surrounded by low lying marshes or fens.
It is also the home of the University of Cambridge, the second oldest university in the United Kingdom. The official legend is that scholars fleeing from Oxford landlords set up seminars wherever they could in this area by 1209. There are now 31 colleges that comprise this collegiate university with campuses all around the city. Tourists flock to Cambridge to tour historical buildings and museums and to punt on the River Cam.
