Oxford - Travel England

The City of Oxford was named for its function as the "Ford of the Oxen" across the Thames in early 900 AD. Its thousand year history has given it buildings that cover every era of British architecture. The Thames and Cherwell rivers run through this dynamic multicultural city with a diverse economy. It is located 50 miles NW of London in the central southern England county of Oxfordshire.

Since 1096 AD it has been the home of the University of Oxford which is the first English-speaking university. Today the student body numbers over 21,000 students from around the world who attend the 38 independent colleges and eight private halls. It houses the largest library system in the United Kingdom.
